First Surf Day of the Season

Two weekends ago, I made my first trip out to the beach for this year.  The waves were small but we found a bump all the way down at the inlet in New Smyrna Beach.  I’m not sure what to blame but I had a pretty bad day.  It’s the first time I wasn’t able to stand up on my board, at all.  My first day out at the beginning of the season is usually pretty rough but this was ridiculous.

My hubby thought it would be a great idea to videotape my surf session.  Oh boy, I did not want to see any of it.  “You should watch the video and take a look at your form,” he says.  “It has nothing to do with my form,” I say.  “I couldn’t even stand up one time.  It’s about my lack of strength.”

I’m not usually one to complain about getting older but I am having some arthritis flare ups in my knees and I was told the pain will always be there.  My goal is to strengthen them as much as possible.  I slacked off on my gym workouts as my knees became more painful.  What I didn’t realize, was that I was making it worse by working out with lower weights.  Now it’s like I’m starting over.

The more I paint images of the beach and surfing, the more I can’t wait to get back out there.  And besides, the worse that can happen is that I end up on a paddle board instead of a surfboard.  I’ve been debating on moving up in board size anyway.  So, it’s not a big deal if that’s how it ends up.

For now, I’ll keep showing up at the gym, doing cardio and weights and getting stronger.

  1. Hey, what’s wrong with a paddleboard?!?! 😂😈 I enjoy doing SUP since I dislocated my shoulder during last year’s Irma swell, and I need to take it easy this year if I’d like to keep on truckin’ in the future….🤔👍
I totally know how you feel- I have Kelly Slater days, and I have Wilbur Kookmeyer days- as long as you’re getting out there, you’re doing more than the people sitting on da beach 🤙
