Surfboard Shopping Turns to Buying

It was bound to happen sooner or later.  I finally purchased a surfboard after much deliberation.  My hubby convinced me to go out and spend the money.  As you may know, I have a little trouble letting go of money and especially now that we just went through Financial Peace University.

We drove an hour out to Cocoa Beach to look at a used surfboard.  It looked to be in great condition and they were asking about $400 which isn’t bad for a used board.  The person selling said he was at the Cocoa Beach Surf Company shop, so that’s where we went.  We figured if I didn’t like it or was unsure, Ron Jon’s is right next door and they have some nice boards as well.  As it turns out, the board for sale was in the rental shop but we walked into the main store and they were having a great sale.

This time around, I decided to go with a longer board.  I went in search of a 9’6” fiberglass classic longboard but the sales associate convinced me I’d be happy with an 8’6” epoxy board.  If you don’t surf you may not know this but for some of us, our surfboard feels like an extension of ourselves when we’re out there.  I don’t have a quiver of boards for myself so buying a new one was a little stressful for me.

Here’s what I’m going for…I want to be able to catch the waves before they break, even when they are small.  You know what I’m talking about.  You’re out there on your surfboard waiting for a wave to come that has enough of a peak that it will give you lots of push.  Every 5 minutes or so you get a couple that are big enough to catch.  In the meantime, there’s that one guy on his longboard that’s catching everything you pass on.  The waves are small and smooth but he manages to take it for a long ride down the beach as you watch and wait.

That’s what I’m talking about!

Isn’t she a beauty?

I’m not sure if this board with do the trick but it was what I explained that I wanted.  Being an epoxy board, it’s inexpensive so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I decided it isn’t the one.  I doubt I’ll be hanging ten and walking up and down my board.  All I want is to catch a few, ride a few and have a great, relaxing time.  The board is beautiful and I plan on using it as much as possible so I can get used to her.

I did take her for a test drive the next day and had a good time.  I’m hoping for some calmer seas in the near future.

See you at the beach!

And just for fun, I wanted to add a few pictures of the saltwater fish tank they had in the store bordering the restaurant where we ate lunch.

It’s kinda creepy how the shark stayed at the top of the tank.

This was eel was calm until the nurse shark on the bottom decided to swim into his space.
